For Anastasia, who wanted to study chemistry, being a member of the
Hellenic Air Force had always been a secret dream. We meet Anastasia – a
Master Sergeant – at her workplace during exercise BAW13. She is
waving her arms in the air, marshaling the F-16 pilot back to his
parking position. Altogether there are five female soldiers in the
Greek detachment and Anastasia is one of the technicians.
She has been in the Hellenic Air Force for five years including three
years at military training school. At high school she was one of only
60 girls – out of 200 students. Therefore, working together with men is
not new to Anastasia – and no particular challenge.“I like football
and Call of Duty”, she laughs, “staying feminine in such a male
environment is surely not easy. At work we are all just people. We are
all the same and we have an important job to do”, she continues and she
looks very comfortable among her colleagues.Initially, Anastasia’s
parents were worried about her future. Now, they are very happy and
proud of their daughter’s achievement. “My hometown is very close to an
air base. Since my childhood, I have always been fascinated watching
fighter aircraft flying dreaming that one day I could be a part of the
Hellenic Air Force family. My dream came true and I became a fighter
aircraft technician”.
Being a quick learner Anastasia is highly appreciated at work. The
Greek detachment commander is pleased with the work she does. ”We are
very happy to have her on our team – she is always pleasant,
encouraging team spirit”, he says.Anastasia combines her job with human
science and philosophy studies. Her experience from both the military
and her academic background will be much appreciated in any field.
